Stories and Rhymes, Best Start Family Hubs and Playgrounds Near Higham Hill: a Weekday Guide for Under-5s in E17

If you are on parental leave or have a weekday off with a baby or toddler in Higham Hill, you will know the feeling of wanting to get out of the house without having to travel across London to do it. Waltham Forest has quietly built a genuinely useful network of sessions close to E17 5RY, and parents who come to us at Unique Child Montessori Higham Hill often mention these places as part of their week before or alongside nursery. This guide pulls it together so you can plan without spending an hour clicking around council pages.

One important note before the detail: session times, term-date patterns and booking arrangements do change, and some of the council's own event listings currently show slightly different information on different pages. Treat every time in this guide as a starting point, and always check the live listings at walthamforest.events.mylibrary.digital and walthamforest.gov.uk/beststartinlife before you set off.

Monday: rhyme time Walthamstow library and Higham Hill Library

Monday is a good day to start with the libraries. Higham Hill Library on North Countess Road, E17 5HS, is open from 10am on Mondays and the council lists it as a venue for rhyme time and a wider range of children's events. The library events platform has shown a Rhyme Time at 11am on Mondays in the children's area, but we would encourage you to check that directly at the libraries booking site before you go, as the exact term-time pattern was not confirmed on the main council events page at the time of writing.

Also on Mondays, Higham Hill Library hosts We Are Friends, an intergenerational storytelling session bringing older residents together with under-5s, using puppets, instruments, scarves and bubbles. It is funded through the council's Best Start in Life offer and delivered by The Together Project. The council asks you to book a place for this one.

Higham Hill Library is also one of the venues delivering Best Start Family Hubs programme services, covering health, learning and play activities alongside family support, so it is worth knowing about even outside the specific sessions.

Tuesday and Wednesday: Stories and Rhymes across the borough

Stories and Rhymes at Walthamstow Library on the High Street, E17 7JN, is listed by the council under Best Start in Life and runs across multiple days including Tuesdays. There is also a separate term-time listing showing sessions at 10am and 11am on Tuesdays in the children's area. Because the council's pages currently show more than one timetable for Walthamstow Library, please confirm the current pattern before visiting.

On Wednesdays, Stories and Rhymes runs at both Chingford Library in E4 and Hale End Library, each listed as a Best Start in Life weekly session for under-5s. Chingford Library also hosts Stay and Play on Tuesdays and Thursdays, a Kids' Crafts Club across several days, and a Community Drop-in. The council states no referral is required for library sessions, though it is worth checking individual events.

Chingford Library and South Chingford are within reasonable reach of Higham Hill, and families from our Acorns and Oakleys rooms sometimes mention heading that way on days off.

Thursday and Friday: family hub sessions and employment support

Waltham Forest runs four main Family Hubs: Walthamstow Family Hub at 313 Billet Road E17 5PX, Queens Road Family Hub at 215 Queens Road E17 8PJ, Chingford Family Hub at 5 Oaks Grove E4 6EY, and Leytonstone Family Hub. All are open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

The Walthamstow Family Hub offers a wide range of sessions including Play and Learn for Under-2s, Baby Massage, a HENRY Infant Feeding Group, Speech and Language Support Drop-in, and SEND-specific sessions including Sensory Play and Learn. Some sessions are drop-in; others, such as the Learning Together SEND session, require a referral through the Early Years Inclusion Pathway. Check the hub directory for current days and times.

Child Health Clinics run at several hubs. The Queens Road Family Hub holds a weekly Monday morning clinic from 9:30am to 11:30am where you can have your baby weighed and speak to a health visitor. No booking is needed, but arrive at least 30 minutes before closing to be seen. For general enquiries about Child Health Clinics or to speak to a duty health visitor, call 0300 300 6200.

On Fridays, there is a free drop-in Employment Support for Parents session at South Chingford Library, and you are welcome to bring your child along.

Lloyd Park and Higham Hill Recreation Ground

When the weather is reasonable, both Lloyd Park on Forest Road E17 4QF and Higham Hill Recreation Ground on Sutton Road E17 5QS are close enough for a buggy walk from Higham Hill. Lloyd Park has a playground, sand pit, skate park and the Aveling Centre with the Delice Café, baby changing facilities and level-access paths throughout. Higham Hill Recreation Ground has play areas for under-7s and older children, a basketball and multisport area, and the Homemade Community Café on site. Both parks aim to open by 9am daily.

At Unique Child Montessori Higham Hill, our play rooms lead straight onto our garden, and we are close to both parks, which our children visit as part of their outdoor learning. But on days off or at weekends, these green spaces are genuinely useful for families who simply want to be outside with a toddler without a plan.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Stories and Rhymes at Higham Hill Library and the sessions at Walthamstow Library?

Both are part of Waltham Forest's Best Start in Life programme for under-5s. Higham Hill Library lists a Rhyme Time on Mondays and also hosts the We Are Friends intergenerational session, which requires booking. Walthamstow Library runs Stories and Rhymes across multiple days. Always check current times at walthamforest.events.mylibrary.digital before you go.

Do I need to register with a Family Hub before attending sessions?

For most library-based Stories and Rhymes sessions, the council states no referral is required and you can simply turn up. Some Family Hub sessions, particularly SEND provision such as the Learning Together group at Walthamstow Family Hub, do require a referral. Check the specific event listing on walthamforest.gov.uk/beststartinlife before attending for the first time.

Does Unique Child Montessori Higham Hill accept funded childcare hours?

Yes. We accept both the universal 15-hour entitlement for all three and four year olds and the 30-hour entitlement for eligible working families, which is available from nine months old since September 2025. Funded hours are spread across our 51-week year. See our fees and funding page for how this works in practice.

What happens when I first visit Unique Child Montessori Higham Hill with my child?

We start with a show-around so you can see the rooms, including our Tulips Baby Room, Tulips Toddler Room, Acorns and Oakleys spaces, and meet the team. Before your child starts, we offer a home visit or a video or phone call, followed by three settling-in sessions that we build up gradually. Book a show-around to get started.
